Tournament details - "Final Brawl"

Hamlet, Oedipus, Dirty Harry --- the classic stories always end in blood.

Premise: In the end it all comes down to a single battle, where the factions in the Secret War come together, make and break alliances, and fight each other for the ultimate prize. With the Australian National Championship on the line, who has what it takes to survive and make the correct move at the right moment to achieve ultimate power? Who takes it? Whose regime reigns supreme?

How it works: Standard deck building rules apply. No fancy-schmancy restrictions. Bring your deck along and kick as much arse as you can. Positions for the final round will be determined on points standing after 3 rounds with ties determined at the organiser's discretion. Prizes are awarded based on the result of the final round only.

Tournament details - "Whirlpool of Blood" draft

"Sooner or later, every Innerwalker gets forced to jump in at gunpoint. It's like destiny or something."

Premise: Pass through the netherworld from juncture to juncture, carefully selecting the forces you need to make your mark on the Secret War. Your allies will span time and space - Ancient China, the Wild West of America, a dystopian cyberpunk future and... the 1970's?!?

How it works: Each participant purchases seven Shadowfist booster packets. Before the first round, each player opens the first booster. Participants choose a single card, pass the booster to their left and receive the booster from the player to their right. This continues until there are no more cards to choose in that booster. Repeat with the next booster, passing cards to the right this time and receiving from the left, (alternating directions each round), until they have opened four booster packs. They will then be asked for their faction preference to build a deck (standard deck building rules apply) and given two pods of 5 foundation characters and one of 8 Feng Shui sites. These pod cards are considered to have no rules text. Different factions can be selected. After the first round is played and scored, participants open and draft from the fifth booster, rejig their decks with the new cards, and play again. This continues until four rounds are played, with a new booster drafted and opportunity for changes to the deck in between rounds. Final positions are based on game points.

Tournament details - "Try My Kung Fu!"

You think your Kung Fu is strong? Here! Try my Kung Fu!

Premise: It's easy to get trapped in a false belief your abilities are great because you've mastered your favourite styles. But do you have the superior kung fu to master any style presented to you? Here is your chance to take on the challenge - how will you go as a Syndicate martial artist, a Purist mathemagician, a Dragon Kicker-of-Butts, a Lotus Eunuch or a Jammer Monkey man?

How it works: Each player brings a deck (that ideally is unfamiliar to
all the other players) and hands it to the tournament organiser before
the event. The decks are then reassigned so no player plays with their
own deck, and have only the brief title of the deck to provide any
information on its contents and play style. At the end of each round
you get scored using the usual tournament points rules, but points are
also given to the decks for how well they performed. As well, you give
the deck you played a score out of 5 for its fun and playability. The
deck then gets passed to another player and you play with a new deck.
Points for players and decks are collated and prizes are given to best
deck, best player, best combined, and highest voted deck.

Date/time: Saturday 24 September - 14:00-18:30
Sign in 15 minutes prior.

Format: 3 player, 4 rounds, Round Robin.

Good Games announce prize support

Our hosts for the B & S Brawl, Good Games at Spring Hill, have announced support for one of the lucky tournament winners.

To help promote the game of Shadowfist, B&S Brawl is proud to have a special prize in the "Final Brawl" national titles tournament for the top-ranked player who has only been playing the game less than a year.

Dubbed the "New Recruit", the winner will receive 5 promo cards, a Shadowfist faction button and $50 store credit at Good Games Spring Hill.

This prize is also open to old players who have returned to the game in the last year after an extended period, or occasional players who we haven't seen playing Shadowfist in quite some time, so have a chat to those you know who haven't dusted off their decks in a while and invite them along.

Prize pool!

The box of prizes has just arrived from Inner Kingdom Games. It looks pretty sweet.

As some of you know the B&S Brawl organising committee have been looking around to supplement the prize pool for the big event.

At this point the prize pool includes...

• Shadowfist mugs (little known fact - ladies love the Shadowfist mug. I can't let mine out of my sight around the office.)

We're trying to track down more starter decks, old Shadowfist paraphernalia and other collectibles. Then we'll figure out which tournament gets what bounty for you to play for!

Accommodation options

In speaking with some of the out-of-towners it's become evident that accommodation for the event is an attendance issue, so here's a quick rundown on some of the better, or cheaper, places in close proximity to the tournament site.

Please note the local players are also discussing opening their homes for those who don't have the budget to stretch to a hotel or want to stay in a backpackers. Please get in contact with us and we'll sort out a spare bed, mattress or couch for you to crash for the Friday and/or Saturday night.

By way of mentioning, if you are looking at accommodation and won't have your own transport it's a good idea to find a place close by, as public transport through Spring Hill on a Sunday is sketchy and far between. Of course, you can always catch a bus or train into the city and walk up (maybe 15 minutes from Queen St, 10 from Central Station).

And by "up" I mean exactly that. It's not called Spring Hill for nothing.

Tournament Events at the B&S Brawl

Here's a rundown of what tournaments to expect at the B&S Brawl in September.

Please note this is all still being set in stone and will be updated as things progress.

National Titles
Format: Final Brawl
What that means: All cards from all Shadowfist sets, including promos, are eligible. No fancy deckbuilding rules.
Style: 3 rounds Round Robin (timed) plus Finals.
Winner: Places based on Final round results.
When: Sunday 25 Sept - 2pm-6pm
Options: A second tier award is also in effect for the highest placed player who has only started the game in the last year.

Draft
Format: Whirlpool of Blood
What that means: Players draft cards from boosters by choosing a card and passing the rest to the player next to them. Using standard "pods" of Feng Shui and foundation characters the players build decks and play. Between each round another booster is drafted and changes can be made to the deck.
Style: 4 rounds Round Robin (timed). No finals.
Winner: Game points across all rounds.
What boosters: At this stage, Shurikens & Six Guns, Critical Shift, Empire of Evil. Other sets are being sourced and will be used if possible.
When: Sunday 25 Sept - 9:00am-1:00pm

Alternate Tournament
Format: "Try my Kung-Fu!"
What that means: Standard deck building rules, as per Final Brawl. After each round players pass the deck they played to a different player who must play that deck in that round.
Style: 4 rounds Round Robin (timed). No finals.
Winner: Game points as player plus game points for the deck. Also prizes for highest ranked player, highest ranked deck and vote for most interesting deck.
When: Saturday 24 Sept - 2pm-6pm

And so it's become an Australian outback tradition, regardless of flood, famine or cancelled gaming convention, for the eligible young men and women of the bush to come together for a weekend of fun, socialising and... beating each other silly!

Welcome to the B&S Brawl blog

Hi there and welcome to the information portal of the inaugural Shadowfist B&S Brawl.

Questions?

What is it?
The "B&S Brawl" is a weekend long tournament for the Shadowfist collectible Card Game, including the Australian National Titles. In keeping with the background and theme of the game, the event also plans to include not only card games and tournaments, but also elements based on its Hong Kong action heritage.

Why?
With the collapse of GenCon Oz, the Shadowfist players of Brisbane decided the only way we were going to get an Australian national titles event was to plan it ourselves. The B&S Brawl is our attempt at exactly that.

What's Planned?
At this stage we're looking at;

• two tournament events 
• Australian National Titles (3 player Final Brawl)
• Includes "New Recruit" award for highest-placed player who started in the last year.
• Whirlpool of Blood (3 player draft)
• Recreation games
• Demos
• Movies

Particular events are yet to be set in stone, and will be partly determined by interest in the weekend. If we attract no one but locals, it will be fairly low key. If we attract interstate or international guests we will increase the number and scope of the events.

How much will it cost?
Most events will have no cost to take part in, with the main exception being the draft event.

Of course, your transport, accommodation, meals, etc., are your own expense.

Why the name?
The name "B&S Brawl" is a play on the traditional Australian outback gathering the Bachelors & Spinsters Ball, or B&S Ball, where eligible country men and women would come together to have fun, get drunk and maybe find love. In our case, we're swapping out the "find love" bit and replacing it with "kick arse".
